At Barron McCann, we are committed to service excellence, and that includes investing in our communities, championing future talent, and leading by example in the transition to sustainable technology.

We recently welcomed 35 Year 10 students from Bramcote College to our Derby head office as part of a practical research project exploring the feasibility of implementing electric vehicle (EV) charging points at their school, supporting Bramcote College’s broader ambition to become a carbon-neutral organisation.

Bridging Education and Industry

As part of their GCSE Business coursework, the students are developing a real-world EV infrastructure strategy. Their research spans pricing models, installation logistics, usage policies, and the technical and operational challenges of introducing EV charging solutions.

With the UK EV market expanding rapidly—now exceeding 1.4 million battery‑electric vehicles, a 38.9% year‑on‑year increase (Energy Live News)—and projected to reach $121.7 billion by 2029, this initiative aligns closely with the skills and knowledge needed for future careers in sustainable industries. A record 381,970 new BEVs were sold in 2024, representing 19.6% of all new car registrations—a 21.4% year-on-year growth (Zap-Map). With zero-emission vehicle sales mandated to reach 80% by 2030, initiatives like this provide a timely and relevant experience.

Understanding the EV Ecosystem

During the visit, students had the opportunity to:

  • Engage with our expert teams to explore career paths and employability skills across engineering, operations, and sustainable technology.
  • Examine the lifecycle of EV charger deployment, from site planning and installation to scheduled maintenance and operational management.
  • Evaluate commercial models for cost recovery, user pricing, and demand forecasting.
  • Witness cutting-edge EV technology in action via our strategic partnerships with Virta and Rolec.

Collaboration with Industry Experts

A highlight of the day was hearing directly from two of our valued technology partners: Josh from Rolec and Sukhi from Virta. They each delivered engaging sessions that brought the EV sector to life for the students, from electric vehicle charger hardware and software integration to real-world installation case studies.

Their expert insights added commercial and technical context to the students’ research and demonstrated how our collective efforts power scalable, future-proof EV infrastructure across the UK.

Inspiring Sustainable Thinking

This collaboration offered students valuable insights into how organisations like Barron McCann are advancing sustainability through technological innovation. It also highlighted the importance of strategic alignment with commercial, operational, and environmental goals.

Our entry into the EV charging and EV maintenance services space builds upon our field engineering expertise and long-standing IT service excellence. Whether deploying secure infrastructure or enabling low-carbon transport, we remain committed to delivering results—every time, everywhere.
